Frederick C. Mullis, AFI
...Hero at Large.

After the Navy I came home... I landed a job with the Columbia Metropolitan Airport in the Crash Fire Rescue Department. There were not many calls for mounting 50 caliber machine guns or 20mm. cannons on commercial aircraft, so I did the only other thing that I learned in the Navy, I started fighting fires. I went to work in the Crash Fire Rescue Department in May of 1980 and was there till February 2001 where I was the Training and Safety Oficer for the Department.
I also volunteered with the Lexington County Fire Service at station 9 Oak Grove and 19 Pine Grove. I was the Training Officer for Pine Grove as well
Now as if that is not enough... I also taught for the South Carolina Fire Academy, the South Carolina Emergency Preparedness Division and the American Red Cross.
Some of my accomplishments since leaving the Navy are...
Central South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross, Volunteer of the Year for 1983
South Carolina Governors' Volunteer of the Year Nominee for 1983
Central South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross, Exceptional Service Award for 1984
Oak Grove Fire Department Firefighter of the Year for 1988
South Carolina Adjunct Fire Instructor of the Year for 1993
Lexington County Fire Service Fire Instructor of the Year for 1995 (1st recipient)
Pine Grove Fire Department Fire Officer of the Year for 1997
S.C. Department of Public Safety, Communications Division Employee of the Quarter; Winter 2004
I have moved on again, after almost 5 years with the SC Department of Public Safety as a Telecommunications Operator for the South Carolina Highway Patrol. I was offered a position with DHEC, thats the Department of Health and Environmental Control. I am again working with the Fire Service again as a Fire Safety Surveyor.
